James Smith, london. he met Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim at the elliott school in putney, the same school that turned out Burial, Four Tet and Hot Chip, and the three of them have been The xx since 2006. he produces the band and plays the samplers, turntables, drums and keys.

on his own he started with "Far Nearer" in 2011, then In Colour in 2015, which took a mercury nomination, a grammy nomination and number three in the uk. In Waves followed in 2024.

Solomun, further up this page, sent him two unsolicited remixes of "Waited All Night" and both came out in august 2025. he guested at Solomun +1 in ibiza on 12 july.

The xx came back in 2026 after eight years away, three sold-out nights in mexico city, both coachella weekends, rock werchter, and lollapalooza on 2 august. from 26 august he opens all thirty nights of the harry styles residency at madison square garden, which is why he turns up on our tours page more than almost anyone.

I am so lucky to have many wild and beautiful nights playing around the world to wonderful people and this song came about quite naturally, out of all the amazing nights of music and dancing that I get to experience on and off stage.
