Ali Shirazinia, who performs as dubfire, and Sharam Tayebi were both born in iran and moved to the washington, D.C. area as children. they met at a dance event in the city in 1991 and started deep dish the following year.

in 1994 they built Yoshitoshi as a label of their own, a home for friends' records that grew into a launching pad for other producers. deep dish's own breakthrough came through remix work, most of all a 1995 rework of de'lacy's "Hideaway," which brought in commissions from artists including michael jackson.

their 1998 album Junk Science became a surprise album of the year, and in 2002 they won the grammy for best remixed recording for their version of dido's "Thank You." two years later "Flashdance" reached no. 3 on the uk singles chart, their highest charting record.

the duo set the project aside in 2006 to pursue solo work, reunited briefly in 2014 for the single "Quincy," and announced a full return to the studio and to touring in 2024. their first original release since getting back together, "Midnight," came out in may 2025 with eynka and wrabel.

What made it easy is that Sharam and I have decades of shared history.
